This volume presents a collection of texts and documents (written in German): extracts of political speeches, of correspondences, legal texts, treaties, parliamentary debates, newspaper articles, autobiographies and literary works, as well as maps and statistics. It discusses the different aspects of national unity and identity's issues. It thus follows the path of Germany from the fall of the Holy Roman Germanic Empire in 1806 to the Wihelmian Empire's collapse in 1918. "Was ist des Deutschen Vaterland?"
