It argues that, in order to account for both the transregional entanglements and the internal hierarchies that European colonialism and imperialism have produced since at least the sixteenth century, we need to unlearn received notions of Europe as an unmarked category; and that theoretical and empirical lessons from the Caribbean are central to relearning Europe differently. To conceive of Europe as a creolized space thus means to draw attention to the decisive shifts that its colonial possessions operate in both its historical legacies and its present borders when consistently taken into account. Such reconceptualization entails a simultaneous creolization of theory so as to reinscribe into sociological thought the experiences of peoples and regions racialized as non-European, non-Western, and non-White alongside the multiple entanglements between Europe and its colonies. Drawing on Caribbean perspectives on creolization, I first discuss how creolizing Europe contributes to countering the definition power of ahistorical and unmarked categories. Subsequently, I propose to rethink Europe as a political, cultural, economic, and discursive formation from its current colonial borders in South America and the Caribbean Sea. Finally, I argue that focusing on Europe’s colonial possessions in the Caribbean today and their corresponding geographical referent, Caribbean Europe, is one way to effectively creolize established understandings of Europe’s colonial history as a thing of the past, of a white Western European identity as the norm, and of the European Union as confined to continental Europe. Recent crises in the Caribbean – from the 2017 hurricanes to Brexit – are used as a magnifying glass in order to make Europe’s ongoing colonial entanglements theoretically and politically visible lok: 48928315 3 exp: 48928315 3 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-01-22 $t22:42:16.937 201C/01 $007-01-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01176163132 208@/01 $a07-01-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/223181 $XH lok: 48928315 5 exp: 48928315 5 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-01-22 $t22:42:16.943 201C/01 $007-01-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01176163140 208@/01 $a07-01-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/223181 $XH lok: 48928315 8 exp: 48928315 8 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-01-22 $t22:42:16.948 201C/01 $007-01-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01176163159 208@/01 $a07-01-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/223181 $XH lok: 48928315 10 exp: 48928315 10 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-01-22 $t22:42:16.952 201C/01 $007-01-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01176163167 208@/01 $a07-01-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/223181 $XH lok: 48928315 11 exp: 48928315 11 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-01-22 $t22:42:16.958 201C/01 $007-01-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01176163175 208@/01 $a07-01-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/223181 $XH lok: 48928315 20 exp: 48928315 20 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-01-22 $t22:42:16.963 201C/01 $007-01-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01176163183 208@/01 $a07-01-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/223181 $XH lok: 48928315 21 exp: 48928315 21 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-01-22 $t22:42:16.968 201C/01 $007-01-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01176163191 208@/01 $a07-01-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/223181 $XH lok: 48928315 23 exp: 48928315 23 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-01-22 $t22:42:16.973 201C/01 $007-01-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01176163205 208@/01 $a07-01-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/223181 $XH lok: 48928315 24 exp: 48928315 24 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-01-22 $t22:42:16.978 201C/01 $007-01-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01176163213 208@/01 $a07-01-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/223181 $XH lok: 48928315 25 exp: 48928315 25 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-01-22 $t22:42:16.984 201C/01 $007-01-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01176163221 208@/01 $a07-01-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/223181 $XH lok: 48928315 36 exp: 48928315 36 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-01-22 $t22:42:16.989 201C/01 $007-01-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0117616323X 208@/01 $a07-01-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/223181 $XH lok: 48928315 49 exp: 48928315 49 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-01-22 $t22:42:16.994 201C/01 $007-01-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01176163248 208@/01 $a07-01-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/223181 $XH lok: 48928315 54 exp: 48928315 54 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-01-22 $t22:42:17.003 201C/01 $007-01-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01176163264 208@/01 $a07-01-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/223181 $XH lok: 48928315 108 exp: 48928315 108 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-01-22 $t22:42:17.016 201C/01 $007-01-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01176163280 208@/01 $a07-01-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/223181 $XH lok: 48928315 204 exp: 48928315 204 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-01-22 $t22:42:17.022 201C/01 $007-01-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01176163299 208@/01 $a07-01-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/223181 $XH lok: 48928315 205 exp: 48928315 205 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-01-22 $t22:42:17.027 201C/01 $007-01-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01176163302 208@/01 $a07-01-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/223181 $XH
