A wide range of economic actors - from kings and armies to cities and producers - are discussed within different imperial settings as well as the tools, which enabled and constrained economic outcomes. A central focus are nodes of consumption that are visible in the archaeological and textual records of royal capitals, cities, religious centers, and armies that were stationed, in some cases permanently, in imperial frontier zones. Complementary to the multipolar concentrations of consumption are the fiscal-tributary structures of the empires vis-à-vis other institutions that had the capacity to extract, mobilize, and concentrate resources and wealth. Larger volumes of state-issued coinage in various metals show the new role of coinage in taxation, local economic activities, and social practices, even where textual evidence is absent. Given the overwhelming importance of agriculture, the volume also analyses forms of agrarian development, especially around cities and in imperial frontier zones. Special consideration is given to road- and water-management systems for which there is now sufficient archaeological and documentary evidence to enable cross-disciplinary comparative research. lok: 49796982 3 exp: 49796982 3 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-08-22 $t03:14:34.443 201C/01 $007-08-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01211988465 204P/01 $010.1515/9783110607642 $S0 208@/01 $a07-08-22 $bl lok: 49796982 5 exp: 49796982 5 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-08-22 $t03:14:34.451 201C/01 $007-08-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01211988473 204P/01 $010.1515/9783110607642 $S0 208@/01 $a07-08-22 $bl lok: 49796982 8 exp: 49796982 8 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-08-22 $t03:14:34.455 201C/01 $007-08-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01211988481 204P/01 $010.1515/9783110607642 $S0 208@/01 $a07-08-22 $bl lok: 49796982 10 exp: 49796982 10 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-08-22 $t03:14:34.459 201C/01 $007-08-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0121198849X 204P/01 $010.1515/9783110607642 $S0 208@/01 $a07-08-22 $bl lok: 49796982 11 exp: 49796982 11 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-08-22 $t03:14:34.464 201C/01 $007-08-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01211988503 204P/01 $010.1515/9783110607642 $S0 208@/01 $a07-08-22 $bl lok: 49796982 13 exp: 49796982 13 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-08-22 $t03:14:34.467 201C/01 $007-08-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01211988511 204P/01 $010.1515/9783110607642 $S0 208@/01 $a07-08-22 $bl lok: 49796982 21 exp: 49796982 21 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-08-22 $t03:14:34.476 201C/01 $007-08-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01211988538 204P/01 $010.1515/9783110607642 $S0 208@/01 $a07-08-22 $bl lok: 49796982 23 exp: 49796982 23 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-08-22 $t03:14:34.480 201C/01 $007-08-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01211988546 204P/01 $010.1515/9783110607642 $S0 208@/01 $a07-08-22 $bl lok: 49796982 24 exp: 49796982 24 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-08-22 $t03:14:34.484 201C/01 $007-08-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01211988554 204P/01 $010.1515/9783110607642 $S0 208@/01 $a07-08-22 $bl lok: 49796982 25 exp: 49796982 25 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-08-22 $t03:14:34.489 201C/01 $007-08-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01211988562 204P/01 $010.1515/9783110607642 $S0 208@/01 $a07-08-22 $bl lok: 49796982 36 exp: 49796982 36 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-08-22 $t03:14:34.500 201C/01 $007-08-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01211988570 204P/01 $010.1515/9783110607642 $S0 208@/01 $a07-08-22 $bl lok: 49796982 50 exp: 49796982 50 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-08-22 $t03:14:34.506 201C/01 $007-08-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01211988589 204P/01 $010.1515/9783110607642 $S0 208@/01 $a07-08-22 $bl lok: 49796982 54 exp: 49796982 54 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-08-22 $t03:14:34.510 201C/01 $007-08-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01211988597 204P/01 $010.1515/9783110607642 $S0 208@/01 $a07-08-22 $bl lok: 49796982 71 exp: 49796982 71 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-08-22 $t03:14:34.514 201C/01 $007-08-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01211988600 204P/01 $010.1515/9783110607642 $S0 208@/01 $a07-08-22 $bl lok: 49796982 75 exp: 49796982 75 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-08-22 $t03:14:34.521 201C/01 $007-08-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01211988619 204P/01 $010.1515/9783110607642 $S0 208@/01 $a07-08-22 $bl lok: 49796982 107 exp: 49796982 107 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-08-22 $t03:14:34.528 201C/01 $007-08-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01211988627 204P/01 $010.1515/9783110607642 $S0 208@/01 $a07-08-22 $bl lok: 49796982 204 exp: 49796982 204 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-08-22 $t03:14:34.531 201C/01 $007-08-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01211988635 204P/01 $010.1515/9783110607642 $S0 208@/01 $a07-08-22 $bl lok: 49796982 205 exp: 49796982 205 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-08-22 $t03:14:34.539 201C/01 $007-08-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01211988643 204P/01 $010.1515/9783110607642 $S0 208@/01 $a07-08-22 $bl
