In the past decades, many ROs including the EU, AU or OAS have taken a strong position against coups, establishing a global anti-coup norm in ROs. Yet the responses of ROs to coups are diverse and apparently contradictory. The thesis examines which role ROs play after coups. For doing so, it is analysed when and how ROs respond to coups (research question 1), which factors influence the strength of their responses (research question 2) and under which conditions ROs strive for different post-coup solutions, e.g. the reinstatement of the ousted government or new elections (research question 3). Coups violate basic democratic standards in ROs, but they also constitute a risk to regional stability. It is argued that when confronted with a coup, ROs take both aspects into account and adjust their responses accordingly. Using a mixed-methods approach, which combines quantitative and qualitative techniques, the plausibility of the argument is tested. The results confirm the initial expectation: The more detrimental a coup is for the state of democracy in a country and the higher its risk of destabilizing the region, the more decisively ROs will respond to the event lok: 49907842 3 exp: 49907842 3 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-09-22 $t03:23:48.330 201C/01 $010-09-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01213965217 208@/01 $a10-09-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/229085 $XH lok: 49907842 5 exp: 49907842 5 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-09-22 $t03:23:48.334 201C/01 $010-09-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01213965225 208@/01 $a10-09-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/229085 $XH lok: 49907842 8 exp: 49907842 8 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-09-22 $t03:23:48.337 201C/01 $010-09-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01213965233 208@/01 $a10-09-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/229085 $XH lok: 49907842 10 exp: 49907842 10 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-09-22 $t03:23:48.339 201C/01 $010-09-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01213965241 208@/01 $a10-09-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/229085 $XH lok: 49907842 11 exp: 49907842 11 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-09-22 $t03:23:48.342 201C/01 $010-09-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0121396525X 208@/01 $a10-09-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/229085 $XH lok: 49907842 20 exp: 49907842 20 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-09-22 $t03:23:48.344 201C/01 $010-09-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01213965268 208@/01 $a10-09-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/229085 $XH lok: 49907842 21 exp: 49907842 21 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-09-22 $t03:23:48.347 201C/01 $010-09-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01213965276 208@/01 $a10-09-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/229085 $XH lok: 49907842 23 exp: 49907842 23 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-09-22 $t03:23:48.350 201C/01 $010-09-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01213965284 208@/01 $a10-09-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/229085 $XH lok: 49907842 24 exp: 49907842 24 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-09-22 $t03:23:48.352 201C/01 $010-09-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01213965292 208@/01 $a10-09-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/229085 $XH lok: 49907842 25 exp: 49907842 25 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-09-22 $t03:23:48.355 201C/01 $010-09-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01213965306 208@/01 $a10-09-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/229085 $XH lok: 49907842 36 exp: 49907842 36 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-09-22 $t03:23:48.357 201C/01 $010-09-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01213965314 208@/01 $a10-09-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/229085 $XH lok: 49907842 49 exp: 49907842 49 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-09-22 $t03:23:48.360 201C/01 $010-09-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01213965322 208@/01 $a10-09-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/229085 $XH lok: 49907842 54 exp: 49907842 54 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-09-22 $t03:23:48.365 201C/01 $010-09-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01213965349 208@/01 $a10-09-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/229085 $XH lok: 49907842 108 exp: 49907842 108 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-09-22 $t03:23:48.370 201C/01 $010-09-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01213965365 208@/01 $a10-09-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/229085 $XH lok: 49907842 204 exp: 49907842 204 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-09-22 $t03:23:48.373 201C/01 $010-09-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01213965373 208@/01 $a10-09-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/229085 $XH lok: 49907842 205 exp: 49907842 205 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-09-22 $t03:23:48.376 201C/01 $010-09-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01213965381 208@/01 $a10-09-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/229085 $XH
