Drawing on work in musicology, cultural studies, and critical improvisation studies, as well as his own performing experience, Dan DiPiero argues that comparing improvisation across domains calls into question how improvisation is typically recognized. By comparing the music of Eric Dolphy, Norwegian free improvisers, Mr. K, and the Ingrid Laubrock/Kris Davis duo with improvised activities in everyday life (such as walking, baking, working, and listening), DiPiero concludes that improvisation appears as a function of any encounter between subjects, objects, and environments. Bringing contingency into conversation with the utopian strain of critical improvisation studies, DiPiero shows how particular social investments cause improvisation to be associated with relative freedom, risk-taking, and unpredictability in both scholarship and public discourse. Taking seriously the claim that improvisation is the same thing as living, Contingent Encounters overturns longstanding assumptions about the aesthetic and political implications of this notoriously slippery term."... lok: 50343799 3 exp: 50343799 3 1 #EPN 201B/01 $009-01-23 $t23:25:58.189 201C/01 $009-01-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0122399032X 208@/01 $a09-01-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.3998/mpub.12066852 $XH lok: 50343799 5 exp: 50343799 5 1 #EPN 201B/01 $009-01-23 $t23:25:58.193 201C/01 $009-01-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01223990338 208@/01 $a09-01-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.3998/mpub.12066852 $XH lok: 50343799 8 exp: 50343799 8 1 #EPN 201B/01 $009-01-23 $t23:25:58.196 201C/01 $009-01-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01223990346 208@/01 $a09-01-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.3998/mpub.12066852 $XH lok: 50343799 10 exp: 50343799 10 1 #EPN 201B/01 $009-01-23 $t23:25:58.198 201C/01 $009-01-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01223990354 208@/01 $a09-01-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.3998/mpub.12066852 $XH lok: 50343799 11 exp: 50343799 11 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-03-25 $t23:41:35.360 201C/01 $004-03-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0129447104X 208@/01 $a04-03-25 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.3998/mpub.12066852 $XH lok: 50343799 13 exp: 50343799 13 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-03-25 $t23:41:35.365 201C/01 $004-03-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01294471058 208@/01 $a04-03-25 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.3998/mpub.12066852 $XH lok: 50343799 21 exp: 50343799 21 1 #EPN 201B/01 $009-01-23 $t23:25:58.204 201C/01 $009-01-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01223990370 208@/01 $a09-01-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.3998/mpub.12066852 $XH lok: 50343799 23 exp: 50343799 23 1 #EPN 201B/01 $009-01-23 $t23:25:58.206 201C/01 $009-01-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01223990389 208@/01 $a09-01-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.3998/mpub.12066852 $XH lok: 50343799 24 exp: 50343799 24 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-03-25 $t23:41:35.368 201C/01 $004-03-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01294471066 208@/01 $a04-03-25 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.3998/mpub.12066852 $XH lok: 50343799 25 exp: 50343799 25 1 #EPN 201B/01 $009-01-23 $t23:25:58.209 201C/01 $009-01-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01223990397 208@/01 $a09-01-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.3998/mpub.12066852 $XH lok: 50343799 51 exp: 50343799 51 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-03-25 $t23:41:35.371 201C/01 $004-03-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01294471074 208@/01 $a04-03-25 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.3998/mpub.12066852 $XH lok: 50343799 58 exp: 50343799 58 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-03-25 $t23:41:35.373 201C/01 $004-03-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01294471082 208@/01 $a04-03-25 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.3998/mpub.12066852 $XH lok: 50343799 76 exp: 50343799 76 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-03-25 $t23:41:35.376 201C/01 $004-03-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01294471090 208@/01 $a04-03-25 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.3998/mpub.12066852 $XH lok: 50343799 77 exp: 50343799 77 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-03-25 $t23:41:35.379 201C/01 $004-03-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01294471104 208@/01 $a04-03-25 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.3998/mpub.12066852 $XH lok: 50343799 107 exp: 50343799 107 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-03-25 $t23:41:35.382 201C/01 $004-03-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01294471112 208@/01 $a04-03-25 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.3998/mpub.12066852 $XH lok: 50343799 204 exp: 50343799 204 1 #EPN 201B/01 $009-01-23 $t23:25:58.212 201C/01 $009-01-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01223990400 208@/01 $a09-01-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.3998/mpub.12066852 $XH lok: 50343799 205 exp: 50343799 205 1 #EPN 201B/01 $009-01-23 $t23:25:58.215 201C/01 $009-01-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01223990419 208@/01 $a09-01-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.3998/mpub.12066852 $XH
