Conductors communicate the musical tempo to the orchestra, unifying the individual instrumental voices to form an expressive musical Gestalt.
In a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) experiment, 12 professional conductors and 16 instrumentalists conducted real-time novel pieces with diverse complexity in orchestration and rhythm. For control, participants either listened to the stimuli or performed beat patterns, setting the time of a metronome or complex rhythms played by a drum.
Activation of the left superior temporal gyrus (STG), supplementary and premotor cortex and Broca's pars opercularis (F3op) was shared in both musician groups and separated conducting from the other conditions.
Compared to instrumentalists, conductors activated Broca's pars triangularis (F3tri) and the STG, which differentiated conducting from time beating and reflected the increase in complexity during conducting. In comparison to conductors, instrumentalists activated F3op and F3tri when distinguishing complex rhythm processing from simple rhythm processing.
Fibre selection from a normative human connectome database, constructed using a global tractography approach, showed that the F3op and STG are connected via the arcuate fasciculus, whereas the F3tri and STG are connected via the extreme capsule.
Like language, the anatomical framework characterising conducting gestures is located in the left dorsal system centred on F3op. This system reflected the sensorimotor mapping for structuring gestures to musical tempo. The ventral system centred on F3Tri may reflect the art of conductors to set this musical tempo to the individual orchestra's voices in a global, holistic way lok: 50484506 3 exp: 50484506 3 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-02-23 $t01:30:29.164 201C/01 $010-02-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01227025084 208@/01 $a10-02-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/232244 $XH lok: 50484506 5 exp: 50484506 5 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-02-23 $t01:30:29.168 201C/01 $010-02-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01227025092 208@/01 $a10-02-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/232244 $XH lok: 50484506 8 exp: 50484506 8 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-02-23 $t01:30:29.170 201C/01 $010-02-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01227025106 208@/01 $a10-02-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/232244 $XH lok: 50484506 10 exp: 50484506 10 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-02-23 $t01:30:29.173 201C/01 $010-02-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01227025114 208@/01 $a10-02-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/232244 $XH lok: 50484506 11 exp: 50484506 11 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-02-23 $t01:30:29.176 201C/01 $010-02-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01227025122 208@/01 $a10-02-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/232244 $XH lok: 50484506 13 exp: 50484506 13 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-02-23 $t01:30:29.178 201C/01 $010-02-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01227025130 208@/01 $a10-02-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/232244 $XH lok: 50484506 20 exp: 50484506 20 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-02-23 $t01:30:29.181 201C/01 $010-02-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01227025149 208@/01 $a10-02-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/232244 $XH lok: 50484506 21 exp: 50484506 21 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-02-23 $t01:30:29.184 201C/01 $010-02-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01227025157 208@/01 $a10-02-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/232244 $XH lok: 50484506 23 exp: 50484506 23 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-02-23 $t01:30:29.186 201C/01 $010-02-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01227025165 208@/01 $a10-02-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/232244 $XH lok: 50484506 24 exp: 50484506 24 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-02-23 $t01:30:29.188 201C/01 $010-02-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01227025173 208@/01 $a10-02-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/232244 $XH lok: 50484506 25 exp: 50484506 25 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-02-23 $t01:30:29.192 201C/01 $010-02-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01227025181 208@/01 $a10-02-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/232244 $XH lok: 50484506 51 exp: 50484506 51 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-02-23 $t01:30:29.195 201C/01 $010-02-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0122702519X 208@/01 $a10-02-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/232244 $XH lok: 50484506 58 exp: 50484506 58 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-02-23 $t01:30:29.197 201C/01 $010-02-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01227025203 208@/01 $a10-02-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/232244 $XH lok: 50484506 76 exp: 50484506 76 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-02-23 $t01:30:29.200 201C/01 $010-02-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01227025211 208@/01 $a10-02-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/232244 $XH lok: 50484506 77 exp: 50484506 77 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-02-23 $t01:30:29.202 201C/01 $010-02-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0122702522X 208@/01 $a10-02-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/232244 $XH lok: 50484506 107 exp: 50484506 107 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-02-23 $t01:30:29.204 201C/01 $010-02-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01227025238 208@/01 $a10-02-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/232244 $XH lok: 50484506 204 exp: 50484506 204 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-02-23 $t01:30:29.208 201C/01 $010-02-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01227025246 208@/01 $a10-02-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/232244 $XH lok: 50484506 205 exp: 50484506 205 1 #EPN 201B/01 $010-02-23 $t01:30:29.210 201C/01 $010-02-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01227025254 208@/01 $a10-02-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/232244 $XH
