Building on the comparative case-study and large-N literature, it outlines an episode approach that identifies the discrete beginning of a period of political liberalization, traces its progression, and classifies episodes as successful versus different types of failing outcomes, thus avoiding potentially fallacious assumptions of unit homogeneity. We provide a description and analysis of all 383 liberalization episodes from 1900 to 2019, offering new insights on democratic “waves”. We also demonstrate the value of this approach by showing that while several established covariates are valuable for predicting the ultimate outcomes, none explain the onset of a period of liberalization. lok: 50895833 3 101B $021-06-23 $t15:02:06.000 101C $021-06-23 101U $0utf8 145S/01 $a007 exp: 50895833 3 1 #EPN 201B/01 $021-06-23 $t22:56:16.871 201C/01 $021-06-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01238003575 204U/01 $0urn:nbn:de:hebis:30:3-628983 $S0 208@/01 $a21-06-23 $bl lok: 50895833 5 exp: 50895833 5 1 #EPN 201B/01 $021-06-23 $t22:56:16.874 201C/01 $021-06-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01238003583 204U/01 $0urn:nbn:de:hebis:30:3-628983 $S0 208@/01 $a21-06-23 $bl lok: 50895833 8 exp: 50895833 8 1 #EPN 201B/01 $021-06-23 $t22:56:16.877 201C/01 $021-06-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01238003591 204U/01 $0urn:nbn:de:hebis:30:3-628983 $S0 208@/01 $a21-06-23 $bl lok: 50895833 10 exp: 50895833 10 1 #EPN 201B/01 $021-06-23 $t22:56:16.879 201C/01 $021-06-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01238003605 204U/01 $0urn:nbn:de:hebis:30:3-628983 $S0 208@/01 $a21-06-23 $bl lok: 50895833 11 exp: 50895833 11 1 #EPN 201B/01 $021-06-23 $t22:56:16.882 201C/01 $021-06-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01238003613 204U/01 $0urn:nbn:de:hebis:30:3-628983 $S0 208@/01 $a21-06-23 $bl lok: 50895833 20 exp: 50895833 20 1 #EPN 201B/01 $021-06-23 $t22:56:16.884 201C/01 $021-06-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01238003621 204U/01 $0urn:nbn:de:hebis:30:3-628983 $S0 208@/01 $a21-06-23 $bl lok: 50895833 21 exp: 50895833 21 1 #EPN 201B/01 $021-06-23 $t22:56:16.886 201C/01 $021-06-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0123800363X 204U/01 $0urn:nbn:de:hebis:30:3-628983 $S0 208@/01 $a21-06-23 $bl lok: 50895833 23 exp: 50895833 23 1 #EPN 201B/01 $021-06-23 $t22:56:16.888 201C/01 $021-06-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01238003648 204U/01 $0urn:nbn:de:hebis:30:3-628983 $S0 208@/01 $a21-06-23 $bl lok: 50895833 24 exp: 50895833 24 1 #EPN 201B/01 $021-06-23 $t22:56:16.891 201C/01 $021-06-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01238003656 204U/01 $0urn:nbn:de:hebis:30:3-628983 $S0 208@/01 $a21-06-23 $bl lok: 50895833 25 exp: 50895833 25 1 #EPN 201B/01 $021-06-23 $t22:56:16.893 201C/01 $021-06-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01238003664 204U/01 $0urn:nbn:de:hebis:30:3-628983 $S0 208@/01 $a21-06-23 $bl lok: 50895833 36 exp: 50895833 36 1 #EPN 201B/01 $021-06-23 $t22:56:16.895 201C/01 $021-06-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01238003672 204U/01 $0urn:nbn:de:hebis:30:3-628983 $S0 208@/01 $a21-06-23 $bl lok: 50895833 49 exp: 50895833 49 1 #EPN 201B/01 $021-06-23 $t22:56:16.900 201C/01 $021-06-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01238003680 204U/01 $0urn:nbn:de:hebis:30:3-628983 $S0 208@/01 $a21-06-23 $bl lok: 50895833 54 exp: 50895833 54 1 #EPN 201B/01 $021-06-23 $t22:56:16.906 201C/01 $021-06-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01238003702 204U/01 $0urn:nbn:de:hebis:30:3-628983 $S0 208@/01 $a21-06-23 $bl lok: 50895833 108 exp: 50895833 108 1 #EPN 201B/01 $021-06-23 $t22:56:16.912 201C/01 $021-06-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01238003729 204U/01 $0urn:nbn:de:hebis:30:3-628983 $S0 208@/01 $a21-06-23 $bl lok: 50895833 204 exp: 50895833 204 1 #EPN 201B/01 $021-06-23 $t22:56:16.915 201C/01 $021-06-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01238003737 204U/01 $0urn:nbn:de:hebis:30:3-628983 $S0 208@/01 $a21-06-23 $bl lok: 50895833 205 exp: 50895833 205 1 #EPN 201B/01 $021-06-23 $t22:56:16.917 201C/01 $021-06-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01238003745 204U/01 $0urn:nbn:de:hebis:30:3-628983 $S0 208@/01 $a21-06-23 $bl
