This is interpreted as a case of the paradoxical politics of academic knowledge production in that British imperial policies that were constraining knowledge production in the West Indies were also seen as facilitating anti-colonial awareness and work in London by West Indian actors. Research demonstrating the importance of the metropole as a meeting place for global anti-colonial actors is complemented by shifting the focus to the entangled space between London and the West Indies. This article comparatively analyses the academic politics of the British Colonial Office – a spatial dislocation of knowledge production away from the West Indies – and its perception and challenge by Caribbean intellectuals who were temporarily based in London. The analysis builds on contributions by C.L.R. James and S. Wynter and their reflections on the institutionalisation of research in the West Indies and their experiences in London. Overall, I emphasise a relational and symmetrising analysis of knowledge production in imperial contexts that accounts for the entanglement of imperial politics in the metropole and the colonies, and the perception and potential use of these political entanglements by actors in and from colonial contexts lok: 50939974 3 exp: 50939974 3 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-07-23 $t02:20:16.093 201C/01 $007-07-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01239365659 208@/01 $a07-07-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/235226 $XH lok: 50939974 5 exp: 50939974 5 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-07-23 $t02:20:16.096 201C/01 $007-07-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01239365667 208@/01 $a07-07-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/235226 $XH lok: 50939974 8 exp: 50939974 8 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-07-23 $t02:20:16.099 201C/01 $007-07-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01239365675 208@/01 $a07-07-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/235226 $XH lok: 50939974 10 exp: 50939974 10 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-07-23 $t02:20:16.102 201C/01 $007-07-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01239365683 208@/01 $a07-07-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/235226 $XH lok: 50939974 11 exp: 50939974 11 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-07-23 $t02:20:16.106 201C/01 $007-07-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01239365691 208@/01 $a07-07-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/235226 $XH lok: 50939974 20 exp: 50939974 20 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-07-23 $t02:20:16.109 201C/01 $007-07-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01239365705 208@/01 $a07-07-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/235226 $XH lok: 50939974 21 exp: 50939974 21 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-07-23 $t02:20:16.112 201C/01 $007-07-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01239365713 208@/01 $a07-07-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/235226 $XH lok: 50939974 23 exp: 50939974 23 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-07-23 $t02:20:16.115 201C/01 $007-07-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01239365721 208@/01 $a07-07-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/235226 $XH lok: 50939974 24 exp: 50939974 24 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-07-23 $t02:20:16.118 201C/01 $007-07-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0123936573X 208@/01 $a07-07-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/235226 $XH lok: 50939974 25 exp: 50939974 25 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-07-23 $t02:20:16.121 201C/01 $007-07-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01239365748 208@/01 $a07-07-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/235226 $XH lok: 50939974 36 exp: 50939974 36 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-07-23 $t02:20:16.124 201C/01 $007-07-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01239365756 208@/01 $a07-07-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/235226 $XH lok: 50939974 49 exp: 50939974 49 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-07-23 $t02:20:16.128 201C/01 $007-07-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01239365764 208@/01 $a07-07-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/235226 $XH lok: 50939974 54 exp: 50939974 54 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-07-23 $t02:20:16.134 201C/01 $007-07-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01239365780 208@/01 $a07-07-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/235226 $XH lok: 50939974 108 exp: 50939974 108 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-07-23 $t02:20:16.140 201C/01 $007-07-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01239365802 208@/01 $a07-07-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/235226 $XH lok: 50939974 204 exp: 50939974 204 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-07-23 $t02:20:16.143 201C/01 $007-07-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01239365810 208@/01 $a07-07-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/235226 $XH lok: 50939974 205 exp: 50939974 205 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-07-23 $t02:20:16.146 201C/01 $007-07-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01239365829 208@/01 $a07-07-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttp://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/235226 $XH
