This focus on the great and exceptional has not only led to disproportionate attention to a small subset of historical actors (powerful, white, western men and the occasional token woman), but also obscures the broad range of vocal practices that have informed, co-created and given meaning to human lives and interactions in the past. For most historical actors, life did not consist of grand public speeches, but of private conversations, intimate whispers, hot gossip or interminable quarrels. This volume suggests an extended practice of eavesdropping: rather than listening out for exceptional voices, it listens in on the more mundane aspects of vocality, including speech and song, but also less formalized shouts, hisses, noises and silences. Ranging from the Scottish highlands to China, from the bedroom to the platform, and from the 18th until the 20th century, contributions to this volume seek out spaces and moments that have been documented idiosyncratically or with difficulty, and where the voice and its sounds can be of particular salience. In doing so, the volume argues for a heightened attention to who speaks, and whose voices resound in history, but refuses to take the modern equation between speech and presence/representation for granted. lok: 51131022 3 101B $009-01-24 $t09:15:23.000 101C $009-01-24 101U $0utf8 145S/01 $a039 exp: 51131022 3 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-09-23 $t23:10:20.261 201C/01 $006-09-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01242657754 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111079370 $S0 208@/01 $a06-09-23 $bl lok: 51131022 5 exp: 51131022 5 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-09-23 $t23:10:20.264 201C/01 $006-09-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01242657762 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111079370 $S0 208@/01 $a06-09-23 $bl lok: 51131022 8 exp: 51131022 8 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-09-23 $t23:10:20.267 201C/01 $006-09-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01242657770 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111079370 $S0 208@/01 $a06-09-23 $bl lok: 51131022 10 exp: 51131022 10 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-09-23 $t23:10:20.270 201C/01 $006-09-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01242657789 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111079370 $S0 208@/01 $a06-09-23 $bl lok: 51131022 11 exp: 51131022 11 1 #EPN 201B/01 $012-09-23 $t23:22:47.099 201C/01 $012-09-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01243354712 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111079370 $S0 208@/01 $a12-09-23 $bl lok: 51131022 13 exp: 51131022 13 1 #EPN 201B/01 $012-09-23 $t23:22:47.104 201C/01 $012-09-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01243354720 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111079370 $S0 208@/01 $a12-09-23 $bl lok: 51131022 20 exp: 51131022 20 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-09-23 $t23:10:20.273 201C/01 $006-09-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01242657797 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111079370 $S0 208@/01 $a06-09-23 $bl lok: 51131022 21 exp: 51131022 21 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-09-23 $t23:10:20.275 201C/01 $006-09-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01242657800 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111079370 $S0 208@/01 $a06-09-23 $bl lok: 51131022 23 exp: 51131022 23 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-09-23 $t23:10:20.277 201C/01 $006-09-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01242657819 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111079370 $S0 208@/01 $a06-09-23 $bl lok: 51131022 24 exp: 51131022 24 1 #EPN 201B/01 $012-09-23 $t23:22:47.107 201C/01 $012-09-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01243354739 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111079370 $S0 208@/01 $a12-09-23 $bl lok: 51131022 25 exp: 51131022 25 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-09-23 $t23:10:20.281 201C/01 $006-09-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01242657827 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111079370 $S0 208@/01 $a06-09-23 $bl lok: 51131022 36 exp: 51131022 36 1 #EPN 201B/01 $012-09-23 $t23:22:47.111 201C/01 $012-09-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01243354747 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111079370 $S0 208@/01 $a12-09-23 $bl lok: 51131022 49 exp: 51131022 49 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-04-24 $t03:21:51.194 201C/01 $006-04-24 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01260870723 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111079370 $S0 208@/01 $a06-04-24 $bl lok: 51131022 51 exp: 51131022 51 1 #EPN 201B/01 $012-09-23 $t23:22:47.122 201C/01 $012-09-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01243354763 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111079370 $S0 208@/01 $a12-09-23 $bl lok: 51131022 54 exp: 51131022 54 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-04-24 $t03:21:51.199 201C/01 $006-04-24 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01260870731 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111079370 $S0 208@/01 $a06-04-24 $bl lok: 51131022 59 exp: 51131022 59 1 #EPN 201B/01 $012-09-23 $t23:22:47.129 201C/01 $012-09-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0124335478X 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111079370 $S0 208@/01 $a12-09-23 $bl lok: 51131022 69 exp: 51131022 69 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-04-24 $t03:21:51.202 201C/01 $006-04-24 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0126087074X 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111079370 $S0 208@/01 $a06-04-24 $bl lok: 51131022 75 exp: 51131022 75 1 #EPN 201B/01 $012-09-23 $t23:22:47.135 201C/01 $012-09-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01243354801 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111079370 $S0 208@/01 $a12-09-23 $bl lok: 51131022 76 exp: 51131022 76 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-04-24 $t03:21:51.205 201C/01 $006-04-24 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01260870758 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111079370 $S0 208@/01 $a06-04-24 $bl lok: 51131022 77 exp: 51131022 77 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-04-24 $t03:21:51.208 201C/01 $006-04-24 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01260870766 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111079370 $S0 208@/01 $a06-04-24 $bl lok: 51131022 107 exp: 51131022 107 1 #EPN 201B/01 $012-09-23 $t23:22:47.138 201C/01 $012-09-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0124335481X 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111079370 $S0 208@/01 $a12-09-23 $bl lok: 51131022 108 exp: 51131022 108 1 #EPN 201B/01 $012-09-23 $t23:22:47.140 201C/01 $012-09-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01243354828 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111079370 $S0 208@/01 $a12-09-23 $bl lok: 51131022 204 exp: 51131022 204 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-09-23 $t23:10:20.283 201C/01 $006-09-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01242657835 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111079370 $S0 208@/01 $a06-09-23 $bl lok: 51131022 205 exp: 51131022 205 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-09-23 $t23:10:20.286 201C/01 $006-09-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01242657843 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111079370 $S0 208@/01 $a06-09-23 $bl
