Decisions to punish dissenting religious groups were among the most controversial and consequential policies of early modern states. There was therefore a genuine interest in news about religious persecutions among different strata of society, and writers and publishers were keen to meet this demand. Especially in the Dutch Republic, numerous newspapers, pamphlets, and periodicals flowed from the presses to confront news consumers throughout Europe with the plight of foreign communities. To reach and affect their audiences, opinion makers had to answer a fundamental question, which we still grapple with in our own times: Why should we care about distant suffering? This dissertation investigates, first, which arguments were used to communicate religious persecution ca. 1650-1750, a period that is often approached in terms of political secularization. Second, it identifies which stakeholders were engaged in the international production of topical persecution literature, and examines who they saw as their audience. Finally, tying in with the nascent historiography of early modern 'public diplomacy', this study explores the role which topical persecution literature played in domestic and international politics. lok: 51358399 3 exp: 51358399 3 1 #EPN 201B/01 $030-11-23 $t23:16:42.031 201C/01 $030-11-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01249415403 208@/01 $a30-11-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://hdl.handle.net/1887/81085 $XH lok: 51358399 5 exp: 51358399 5 1 #EPN 201B/01 $030-11-23 $t23:16:42.034 201C/01 $030-11-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01249415411 208@/01 $a30-11-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://hdl.handle.net/1887/81085 $XH lok: 51358399 6 exp: 51358399 6 1 #EPN 201B/01 $015-03-24 $t22:44:52.383 201C/01 $015-03-24 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01258307073 208@/01 $a15-03-24 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://hdl.handle.net/1887/81085 $XH lok: 51358399 8 exp: 51358399 8 1 #EPN 201B/01 $030-11-23 $t23:16:42.037 201C/01 $030-11-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0124941542X 208@/01 $a30-11-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://hdl.handle.net/1887/81085 $XH lok: 51358399 10 exp: 51358399 10 1 #EPN 201B/01 $030-11-23 $t23:16:42.040 201C/01 $030-11-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01249415438 208@/01 $a30-11-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://hdl.handle.net/1887/81085 $XH lok: 51358399 11 exp: 51358399 11 1 #EPN 201B/01 $015-03-24 $t22:44:52.410 201C/01 $015-03-24 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01258307081 208@/01 $a15-03-24 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://hdl.handle.net/1887/81085 $XH lok: 51358399 13 exp: 51358399 13 1 #EPN 201B/01 $015-03-24 $t22:44:52.461 201C/01 $015-03-24 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0125830709X 208@/01 $a15-03-24 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://hdl.handle.net/1887/81085 $XH lok: 51358399 20 exp: 51358399 20 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-03-24 $t22:41:56.861 201C/01 $018-03-24 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01258384191 208@/01 $a18-03-24 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://hdl.handle.net/1887/81085 $XH lok: 51358399 21 exp: 51358399 21 1 #EPN 201B/01 $030-11-23 $t23:16:42.042 201C/01 $030-11-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01249415446 208@/01 $a30-11-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://hdl.handle.net/1887/81085 $XH lok: 51358399 23 exp: 51358399 23 1 #EPN 201B/01 $030-11-23 $t23:16:42.044 201C/01 $030-11-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01249415454 208@/01 $a30-11-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://hdl.handle.net/1887/81085 $XH lok: 51358399 24 exp: 51358399 24 1 #EPN 201B/01 $015-03-24 $t22:44:52.464 201C/01 $015-03-24 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01258307103 208@/01 $a15-03-24 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://hdl.handle.net/1887/81085 $XH lok: 51358399 25 exp: 51358399 25 1 #EPN 201B/01 $030-11-23 $t23:16:42.047 201C/01 $030-11-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01249415462 208@/01 $a30-11-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://hdl.handle.net/1887/81085 $XH lok: 51358399 36 exp: 51358399 36 1 #EPN 201B/01 $015-03-24 $t22:44:52.467 201C/01 $015-03-24 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01258307111 208@/01 $a15-03-24 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://hdl.handle.net/1887/81085 $XH lok: 51358399 51 exp: 51358399 51 1 #EPN 201B/01 $015-03-24 $t22:44:52.470 201C/01 $015-03-24 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0125830712X 208@/01 $a15-03-24 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://hdl.handle.net/1887/81085 $XH lok: 51358399 54 exp: 51358399 54 1 #EPN 201B/01 $015-03-24 $t22:44:52.472 201C/01 $015-03-24 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01258307138 208@/01 $a15-03-24 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://hdl.handle.net/1887/81085 $XH lok: 51358399 74 exp: 51358399 74 1 #EPN 201B/01 $011-10-24 $t23:40:12.132 201C/01 $011-10-24 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01277240736 208@/01 $a11-10-24 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://hdl.handle.net/1887/81085 $XH lok: 51358399 75 exp: 51358399 75 1 #EPN 201B/01 $015-03-24 $t22:44:52.477 201C/01 $015-03-24 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01258307154 208@/01 $a15-03-24 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://hdl.handle.net/1887/81085 $XH lok: 51358399 76 exp: 51358399 76 1 #EPN 201B/01 $015-03-24 $t22:44:52.479 201C/01 $015-03-24 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01258307162 208@/01 $a15-03-24 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://hdl.handle.net/1887/81085 $XH lok: 51358399 107 exp: 51358399 107 1 #EPN 201B/01 $015-03-24 $t22:44:52.483 201C/01 $015-03-24 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01258307170 208@/01 $a15-03-24 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://hdl.handle.net/1887/81085 $XH lok: 51358399 108 exp: 51358399 108 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-03-24 $t22:41:56.907 201C/01 $018-03-24 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01258384205 208@/01 $a18-03-24 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://hdl.handle.net/1887/81085 $XH lok: 51358399 204 exp: 51358399 204 1 #EPN 201B/01 $030-11-23 $t23:16:42.050 201C/01 $030-11-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01249415470 208@/01 $a30-11-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://hdl.handle.net/1887/81085 $XH lok: 51358399 205 exp: 51358399 205 1 #EPN 201B/01 $030-11-23 $t23:16:42.052 201C/01 $030-11-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01249415489 208@/01 $a30-11-23 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://hdl.handle.net/1887/81085 $XH
