This contribution investigates how different aspects of social belonging, that is, quality, quantity, and perception of one's own social relationships, relate to electoral abstention and to populist voting on the left and right. Employing multilevel regression models using data from four waves of the European Social Survey, this study finds that all measures of social belonging foster turnout, but they exert an incoherent influence on populist voting depending on the party's ideological leaning. While social belonging plays a subordinate role for left populist support, strong social belonging reduces the probability to support populist parties on the right. With that, the study analysis offers a nuanced view on how different dimensions of social belonging relate to electoral behavior. By doing so, this study sheds light on what aspects of social belonging encourage, or inhibit, which form of “protest at the ballot box.” lok: 51363651 3 101B $004-12-23 $t11:51:42.000 101C $004-12-23 101U $0utf8 145S/01 $a006 145S/02 $a007 exp: 51363651 3 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-12-23 $t22:51:33.072 201C/01 $004-12-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01250009197 204U/01 $0urn:nbn:de:hebis:30:3-763214 $S0 208@/01 $a04-12-23 $bl lok: 51363651 5 exp: 51363651 5 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-12-23 $t22:51:33.076 201C/01 $004-12-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01250009200 204U/01 $0urn:nbn:de:hebis:30:3-763214 $S0 208@/01 $a04-12-23 $bl lok: 51363651 8 exp: 51363651 8 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-12-23 $t22:51:33.078 201C/01 $004-12-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01250009219 204U/01 $0urn:nbn:de:hebis:30:3-763214 $S0 208@/01 $a04-12-23 $bl lok: 51363651 10 exp: 51363651 10 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-12-23 $t22:51:33.081 201C/01 $004-12-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01250009227 204U/01 $0urn:nbn:de:hebis:30:3-763214 $S0 208@/01 $a04-12-23 $bl lok: 51363651 11 exp: 51363651 11 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-12-23 $t22:51:33.092 201C/01 $004-12-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01250009235 204U/01 $0urn:nbn:de:hebis:30:3-763214 $S0 208@/01 $a04-12-23 $bl lok: 51363651 20 exp: 51363651 20 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-12-23 $t22:51:33.098 201C/01 $004-12-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01250009243 204U/01 $0urn:nbn:de:hebis:30:3-763214 $S0 208@/01 $a04-12-23 $bl lok: 51363651 21 exp: 51363651 21 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-12-23 $t22:51:33.101 201C/01 $004-12-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01250009251 204U/01 $0urn:nbn:de:hebis:30:3-763214 $S0 208@/01 $a04-12-23 $bl lok: 51363651 23 exp: 51363651 23 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-12-23 $t22:51:33.105 201C/01 $004-12-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0125000926X 204U/01 $0urn:nbn:de:hebis:30:3-763214 $S0 208@/01 $a04-12-23 $bl lok: 51363651 24 exp: 51363651 24 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-12-23 $t22:51:33.108 201C/01 $004-12-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01250009278 204U/01 $0urn:nbn:de:hebis:30:3-763214 $S0 208@/01 $a04-12-23 $bl lok: 51363651 25 exp: 51363651 25 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-12-23 $t22:51:33.111 201C/01 $004-12-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01250009286 204U/01 $0urn:nbn:de:hebis:30:3-763214 $S0 208@/01 $a04-12-23 $bl lok: 51363651 36 exp: 51363651 36 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-12-23 $t22:51:33.114 201C/01 $004-12-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01250009294 204U/01 $0urn:nbn:de:hebis:30:3-763214 $S0 208@/01 $a04-12-23 $bl lok: 51363651 49 exp: 51363651 49 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-12-23 $t22:51:33.117 201C/01 $004-12-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01250009308 204U/01 $0urn:nbn:de:hebis:30:3-763214 $S0 208@/01 $a04-12-23 $bl lok: 51363651 54 exp: 51363651 54 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-12-23 $t22:51:33.122 201C/01 $004-12-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01250009324 204U/01 $0urn:nbn:de:hebis:30:3-763214 $S0 208@/01 $a04-12-23 $bl lok: 51363651 69 exp: 51363651 69 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-12-23 $t22:51:33.128 201C/01 $004-12-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01250009340 204U/01 $0urn:nbn:de:hebis:30:3-763214 $S0 208@/01 $a04-12-23 $bl lok: 51363651 76 exp: 51363651 76 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-12-23 $t22:51:33.131 201C/01 $004-12-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01250009359 204U/01 $0urn:nbn:de:hebis:30:3-763214 $S0 208@/01 $a04-12-23 $bl lok: 51363651 107 exp: 51363651 107 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-12-23 $t22:51:33.133 201C/01 $004-12-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01250009367 204U/01 $0urn:nbn:de:hebis:30:3-763214 $S0 208@/01 $a04-12-23 $bl lok: 51363651 108 exp: 51363651 108 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-12-23 $t22:51:33.136 201C/01 $004-12-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01250009375 204U/01 $0urn:nbn:de:hebis:30:3-763214 $S0 208@/01 $a04-12-23 $bl lok: 51363651 204 exp: 51363651 204 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-12-23 $t22:51:33.139 201C/01 $004-12-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01250009383 204U/01 $0urn:nbn:de:hebis:30:3-763214 $S0 208@/01 $a04-12-23 $bl lok: 51363651 205 exp: 51363651 205 1 #EPN 201B/01 $004-12-23 $t22:51:33.143 201C/01 $004-12-23 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01250009391 204U/01 $0urn:nbn:de:hebis:30:3-763214 $S0 208@/01 $a04-12-23 $bl
