Der sogenannte Behaim-Globus wurde 1492 von Martin Behaim im Auftrag des Rates der Stadt Nürnberg konzipiert und von verschiedenen Künstlern und Handwerkern geschaffen. Seit 2023 zählt er zum UNESCO-Weltdokumentenerbe. Mit rund 2000 Orten, Inschriften und etwa 200 Piktogrammen gleicht der Behaim-Globus einer Enzyklopädie in Kugelform. Die Verweise auf Handelsrouten und Ressourcenvorkommen in allen Teilen der Welt zeigen die wirtschaftlichen Interessen im christlichen Mitteleuropa auf und dokumentieren die Anfänge der europäischen Expansion. Er ist eines der letzten kartographischen Werke, die die damals bekannte Welt darstellen, denn mit der zeitgleichen „Entdeckung“ Amerikas 1492 durch Christoph Kolumbus war der Behaim-Globus im Grunde bereits während seiner Entstehung überholt. Die Online-Präsentation erläutert die Entstehungs- und Rezeptionsgeschichte des Globus, stellt einzelne dargestellte Orte, Personen, Lebewesen und Symbole kurz vor und setzt sie in Bezug zu weiteren verwandten Objekten aus der Sammlung des Germanischen Nationalmuseums. - [Engl.:] The Globus 1492 database of the Germanisches Nationalmuseum Nuremberg and the Leibnitz Association presents the oldest known globe in detail. The so-called Behaim globe was designed in 1492 by Martin Behaim on behalf of the Nuremberg City Council and created by various artists and craftsmen. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Document since 2023. With around 2,000 locations, inscriptions and around 200 pictograms, the Behaim globe resembles an encyclopaedia in the shape of an orb. The references to trade routes and resource deposits in all parts of the world show the economic interests in Christian Central Europe and document the beginnings of European expansion. It is one of the last cartographic works to depict the known world at the time, as the Behaim globe was basically already outdated during its creation with the simultaneous "discovery" of America by Christopher Columbus in 1492.
