Religions could be the glue that held an empire together, bolstering the legitimacy of individual rulers and of the imperial enterprise as a whole. Yet, they could also challenge this legitimacy and jeopardize an empire's cohesiveness. As empires by definition ruled heterogeneous populations, they had to interact with a variety of religious cults, creeds, and establishments. These interactions moved from accommodation and toleration, to cooptation, control, or suppression; from aligning with a single religion to celebrating religious diversity or even inventing a new transcendent civic religion; and from lavish patronage to indifference. The volume's contributors investigate these dynamics in major Eurasian empires-from those that functioned in a relatively tolerant religious landscape (Ashokan India, early China, Hellenistic, and Roman empires) to those that allied with a single proselytizing or non-proselytizing creed (Sassanian Iran, Christian and Islamic empires), to those that tried to accommodate different creeds through "pay for pray" policies (Tang China, the Mongols), exploring the advantages and disadvantages of each of these choices. lok: 51695134 3 exp: 51695134 3 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-04-24 $t22:20:54.558 201C/01 $006-04-24 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01260893391 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111342009 $S0 208@/01 $a06-04-24 $bl lok: 51695134 5 exp: 51695134 5 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-04-24 $t22:20:54.562 201C/01 $006-04-24 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01260893405 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111342009 $S0 208@/01 $a06-04-24 $bl lok: 51695134 6 exp: 51695134 6 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-04-24 $t22:20:54.564 201C/01 $006-04-24 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01260893413 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111342009 $S0 208@/01 $a06-04-24 $bl lok: 51695134 8 exp: 51695134 8 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-04-24 $t22:20:54.567 201C/01 $006-04-24 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01260893421 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111342009 $S0 208@/01 $a06-04-24 $bl lok: 51695134 10 exp: 51695134 10 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-04-24 $t22:20:54.569 201C/01 $006-04-24 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0126089343X 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111342009 $S0 208@/01 $a06-04-24 $bl lok: 51695134 11 exp: 51695134 11 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-04-24 $t22:20:54.572 201C/01 $006-04-24 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01260893448 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111342009 $S0 208@/01 $a06-04-24 $bl lok: 51695134 13 exp: 51695134 13 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-04-24 $t22:20:54.574 201C/01 $006-04-24 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01260893456 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111342009 $S0 208@/01 $a06-04-24 $bl lok: 51695134 21 exp: 51695134 21 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-04-24 $t22:20:54.577 201C/01 $006-04-24 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01260893464 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111342009 $S0 208@/01 $a06-04-24 $bl lok: 51695134 23 exp: 51695134 23 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-04-24 $t22:20:54.579 201C/01 $006-04-24 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01260893472 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111342009 $S0 208@/01 $a06-04-24 $bl lok: 51695134 24 exp: 51695134 24 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-06-24 $t00:17:17.449 201C/01 $006-06-24 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01264720661 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111342009 $S0 208@/01 $a06-06-24 $bl lok: 51695134 25 exp: 51695134 25 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-04-24 $t22:20:54.581 201C/01 $006-04-24 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01260893480 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111342009 $S0 208@/01 $a06-04-24 $bl lok: 51695134 36 exp: 51695134 36 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-04-24 $t22:20:54.585 201C/01 $006-04-24 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01260893499 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111342009 $S0 208@/01 $a06-04-24 $bl lok: 51695134 51 exp: 51695134 51 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-06-24 $t00:17:17.453 201C/01 $006-06-24 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0126472067X 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111342009 $S0 208@/01 $a06-06-24 $bl lok: 51695134 54 exp: 51695134 54 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-04-24 $t22:20:54.589 201C/01 $006-04-24 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01260893510 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111342009 $S0 208@/01 $a06-04-24 $bl lok: 51695134 59 exp: 51695134 59 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-06-24 $t00:17:17.456 201C/01 $006-06-24 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01264720688 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111342009 $S0 208@/01 $a06-06-24 $bl lok: 51695134 69 exp: 51695134 69 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-04-24 $t22:20:54.595 201C/01 $006-04-24 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01260893537 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111342009 $S0 208@/01 $a06-04-24 $bl lok: 51695134 75 exp: 51695134 75 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-06-24 $t00:17:17.462 201C/01 $006-06-24 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0126472070X 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111342009 $S0 208@/01 $a06-06-24 $bl lok: 51695134 76 exp: 51695134 76 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-04-24 $t22:20:54.597 201C/01 $006-04-24 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01260893545 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111342009 $S0 208@/01 $a06-04-24 $bl lok: 51695134 107 exp: 51695134 107 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-04-24 $t22:20:54.599 201C/01 $006-04-24 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01260893553 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111342009 $S0 208@/01 $a06-04-24 $bl lok: 51695134 108 exp: 51695134 108 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-06-24 $t00:17:17.464 201C/01 $006-06-24 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01264720718 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111342009 $S0 208@/01 $a06-06-24 $bl lok: 51695134 204 exp: 51695134 204 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-04-24 $t22:20:54.602 201C/01 $006-04-24 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01260893561 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111342009 $S0 208@/01 $a06-04-24 $bl lok: 51695134 205 exp: 51695134 205 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-04-24 $t22:20:54.604 201C/01 $006-04-24 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0126089357X 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111342009 $S0 208@/01 $a06-04-24 $bl
