In recent decades, however, the debate about the interpretation and validity of monuments in public space has intensified, as their cultural practices of remembrance have been put to the test against the backdrop of a diverse society and related issues of (dis)power. The focus was and is primarily on monuments that are perceived as controversial, which were and are no longer treated only communicatively, but also performatively and interventively in the form of monumental changes. Questions about the effects of monuments and how to deal with them have been addressed primarily in the humanities and cultural studies. This interdisciplinary anthology aims to build on this and, in addition to historical, political or philosophical perspectives, also includes perspectives that broaden the discourse through contributions from law, theology and art studies.
