Its contributors explore the role of religion in overcoming and creating structures of dependency from different disciplines and academic backgrounds. The question of the role of religion in justifying, perpetuating, modifying, and abolishing slavery and other forms of strong asymmetrical dependency is still a much-debated topic within historical and social sciences. The equality of all human beings before God, gods, or the divine is deeply rooted in religious thought. Conversion to one or another religion has, therefore, often led to critique, transformation, and even abolition of existing social structures, institutions, and their corresponding dependencies. Yet religious discourse has also been used to justify the subjection of individuals and whole peoples. In addition, throughout history, religious institutions themselves have often mirrored the social hierarchies and inequalities of the surrounding societies. Concomitantly, practitioners of these religious traditions have created systems of dependency within their own institutional, social, legal, and spiritual structures. This volume makes clear that not even the metaphysical world is free of dependencies: influential strands of almost all major religious traditions envisage hierarchies of gods, angels, demons, and other metaphysical beings. lok: 52581773 3 exp: 52581773 3 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-02-25 $t23:33:08.353 201C/01 $006-02-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01291161732 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111380575 $S0 208@/01 $a06-02-25 $bl lok: 52581773 5 exp: 52581773 5 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-02-25 $t23:33:08.357 201C/01 $006-02-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01291161740 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111380575 $S0 208@/01 $a06-02-25 $bl lok: 52581773 6 exp: 52581773 6 1 #EPN 201B/01 $003-04-25 $t23:20:49.370 201C/01 $003-04-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01297295323 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111380575 $S0 208@/01 $a03-04-25 $bl lok: 52581773 8 exp: 52581773 8 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-02-25 $t23:33:08.360 201C/01 $006-02-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01291161759 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111380575 $S0 208@/01 $a06-02-25 $bl lok: 52581773 10 exp: 52581773 10 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-02-25 $t23:33:08.363 201C/01 $006-02-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01291161767 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111380575 $S0 208@/01 $a06-02-25 $bl lok: 52581773 11 exp: 52581773 11 1 #EPN 201B/01 $003-04-25 $t23:20:49.372 201C/01 $003-04-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01297295331 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111380575 $S0 208@/01 $a03-04-25 $bl lok: 52581773 13 exp: 52581773 13 1 #EPN 201B/01 $003-04-25 $t23:20:49.374 201C/01 $003-04-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0129729534X 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111380575 $S0 208@/01 $a03-04-25 $bl lok: 52581773 20 exp: 52581773 20 1 #EPN 201B/01 $003-04-25 $t23:20:49.378 201C/01 $003-04-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01297295358 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111380575 $S0 208@/01 $a03-04-25 $bl lok: 52581773 21 exp: 52581773 21 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-02-25 $t23:33:08.366 201C/01 $006-02-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01291161775 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111380575 $S0 208@/01 $a06-02-25 $bl lok: 52581773 23 exp: 52581773 23 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-02-25 $t23:33:08.368 201C/01 $006-02-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01291161783 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111380575 $S0 208@/01 $a06-02-25 $bl lok: 52581773 24 exp: 52581773 24 1 #EPN 201B/01 $003-04-25 $t23:20:49.380 201C/01 $003-04-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01297295366 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111380575 $S0 208@/01 $a03-04-25 $bl lok: 52581773 25 exp: 52581773 25 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-02-25 $t23:33:08.371 201C/01 $006-02-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01291161791 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111380575 $S0 208@/01 $a06-02-25 $bl lok: 52581773 36 exp: 52581773 36 1 #EPN 201B/01 $003-04-25 $t23:20:49.383 201C/01 $003-04-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01297295374 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111380575 $S0 208@/01 $a03-04-25 $bl lok: 52581773 49 exp: 52581773 49 1 #EPN 201B/01 $003-04-25 $t23:20:49.386 201C/01 $003-04-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01297295382 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111380575 $S0 208@/01 $a03-04-25 $bl lok: 52581773 51 exp: 52581773 51 1 #EPN 201B/01 $003-04-25 $t23:20:49.392 201C/01 $003-04-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01297295404 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111380575 $S0 208@/01 $a03-04-25 $bl lok: 52581773 54 exp: 52581773 54 1 #EPN 201B/01 $003-04-25 $t23:20:49.395 201C/01 $003-04-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01297295412 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111380575 $S0 208@/01 $a03-04-25 $bl lok: 52581773 59 exp: 52581773 59 1 #EPN 201B/01 $003-04-25 $t23:20:49.400 201C/01 $003-04-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01297295439 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111380575 $S0 208@/01 $a03-04-25 $bl lok: 52581773 69 exp: 52581773 69 1 #EPN 201B/01 $003-04-25 $t23:20:49.403 201C/01 $003-04-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01297295447 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111380575 $S0 208@/01 $a03-04-25 $bl lok: 52581773 75 exp: 52581773 75 1 #EPN 201B/01 $003-04-25 $t23:20:49.406 201C/01 $003-04-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01297295455 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111380575 $S0 208@/01 $a03-04-25 $bl lok: 52581773 76 exp: 52581773 76 1 #EPN 201B/01 $003-04-25 $t23:20:49.408 201C/01 $003-04-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01297295463 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111380575 $S0 208@/01 $a03-04-25 $bl lok: 52581773 107 exp: 52581773 107 1 #EPN 201B/01 $003-04-25 $t23:20:49.411 201C/01 $003-04-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01297295471 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111380575 $S0 208@/01 $a03-04-25 $bl lok: 52581773 108 exp: 52581773 108 1 #EPN 201B/01 $003-04-25 $t23:20:50.342 201C/01 $003-04-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0129729548X 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111380575 $S0 208@/01 $a03-04-25 $bl lok: 52581773 204 exp: 52581773 204 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-02-25 $t23:33:08.374 201C/01 $006-02-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01291161805 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111380575 $S0 208@/01 $a06-02-25 $bl lok: 52581773 205 exp: 52581773 205 1 #EPN 201B/01 $006-02-25 $t23:33:08.377 201C/01 $006-02-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01291161813 204P/01 $010.1515/9783111380575 $S0 208@/01 $a06-02-25 $bl
