Von Eschen offers a sweeping examination of the cold war's afterlife and the lingering shadows it casts over geopolitics, journalism, and popular culture. She shows how myriad forms of nostalgia across the globe-from those that posit a mythic national past to those critical of neoliberalism that remember a time when people believed in the possibility of a collective good-indelibly shape the post-cold war era. When Western triumphalism moved into the global South and former Eastern bloc spaces, many articulated a powerful sense of loss and a longing for stability. Innovatively bringing together diplomatic archives, museums, films, and video games, Von Eschen shows that as the United States continuously sought new enemies for its unipolar world, cold war triumphalism fueled the ascendancy of xenophobic right-wing nationalism and the embrace of authoritarian sensibilities in the United States and beyond. Ultimately, she demonstrates that triumphalist claims that capitalism and military might won the cold war distort the past and disfigure the present, undermining democratic values and institutions. lok: 52791185 3 exp: 52791185 3 1 #EPN 201B/01 $008-03-25 $t00:07:05.564 201C/01 $007-03-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01294641387 204P/01 $010.1515/9781478092629 $S0 208@/01 $a07-03-25 $bl lok: 52791185 5 exp: 52791185 5 1 #EPN 201B/01 $008-03-25 $t00:07:05.566 201C/01 $007-03-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01294641395 204P/01 $010.1515/9781478092629 $S0 208@/01 $a07-03-25 $bl lok: 52791185 8 exp: 52791185 8 1 #EPN 201B/01 $008-03-25 $t00:07:05.569 201C/01 $007-03-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01294641409 204P/01 $010.1515/9781478092629 $S0 208@/01 $a07-03-25 $bl lok: 52791185 10 exp: 52791185 10 1 #EPN 201B/01 $008-03-25 $t00:07:05.571 201C/01 $007-03-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01294641417 204P/01 $010.1515/9781478092629 $S0 208@/01 $a07-03-25 $bl lok: 52791185 11 exp: 52791185 11 1 #EPN 201B/01 $008-03-25 $t00:07:05.574 201C/01 $007-03-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01294641425 204P/01 $010.1515/9781478092629 $S0 208@/01 $a07-03-25 $bl lok: 52791185 13 exp: 52791185 13 1 #EPN 201B/01 $008-03-25 $t00:07:05.577 201C/01 $007-03-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01294641433 204P/01 $010.1515/9781478092629 $S0 208@/01 $a07-03-25 $bl lok: 52791185 21 exp: 52791185 21 1 #EPN 201B/01 $008-03-25 $t00:07:05.579 201C/01 $007-03-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01294641441 204P/01 $010.1515/9781478092629 $S0 208@/01 $a07-03-25 $bl lok: 52791185 23 exp: 52791185 23 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-04-25 $t22:36:21.000 201C/01 $007-03-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01294641352 204P/01 $010.1515/9781478092629 $S0 208@/01 $a07-03-25 $bl lok: 52791185 24 exp: 52791185 24 1 #EPN 201B/01 $008-03-25 $t00:07:05.582 201C/01 $007-03-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0129464145X 204P/01 $010.1515/9781478092629 $S0 208@/01 $a07-03-25 $bl lok: 52791185 25 exp: 52791185 25 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-03-25 $t10:45:37.000 201C/01 $007-03-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01294596942 204P/01 $010.1515/9781478092629 208@/01 $a07-03-25 $boeb 209B/01 $adG ebs $x05 237A/01 $aOnline-Zugang nur im Netz der Universität Mainz exp: 52791185 25 2 #EPN 201B/02 $008-03-25 $t00:07:05.559 201C/02 $007-03-25 201U/02 $0utf8 203@/02 $01294641360 204P/02 $010.1515/9781478092629 $S0 208@/02 $a07-03-25 $bl lok: 52791185 36 exp: 52791185 36 1 #EPN 201B/01 $008-03-25 $t00:07:05.609 201C/01 $007-03-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01294641468 204P/01 $010.1515/9781478092629 $S0 208@/01 $a07-03-25 $bl lok: 52791185 51 exp: 52791185 51 1 #EPN 201B/01 $008-03-25 $t00:07:05.662 201C/01 $007-03-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01294641484 204P/01 $010.1515/9781478092629 $S0 208@/01 $a07-03-25 $bl lok: 52791185 59 exp: 52791185 59 1 #EPN 201B/01 $008-03-25 $t00:07:05.667 201C/01 $007-03-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01294641506 204P/01 $010.1515/9781478092629 $S0 208@/01 $a07-03-25 $bl lok: 52791185 75 exp: 52791185 75 1 #EPN 201B/01 $008-03-25 $t00:07:05.670 201C/01 $007-03-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01294641514 204P/01 $010.1515/9781478092629 $S0 208@/01 $a07-03-25 $bl lok: 52791185 107 exp: 52791185 107 1 #EPN 201B/01 $008-03-25 $t00:07:05.673 201C/01 $007-03-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01294641522 204P/01 $010.1515/9781478092629 $S0 208@/01 $a07-03-25 $bl lok: 52791185 108 exp: 52791185 108 1 #EPN 201B/01 $008-03-25 $t00:07:05.676 201C/01 $007-03-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01294641530 204P/01 $010.1515/9781478092629 $S0 208@/01 $a07-03-25 $bl lok: 52791185 204 exp: 52791185 204 1 #EPN 201B/01 $008-03-25 $t00:07:05.678 201C/01 $007-03-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01294641549 204P/01 $010.1515/9781478092629 $S0 208@/01 $a07-03-25 $bl lok: 52791185 205 exp: 52791185 205 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-03-25 $t09:47:58.000 201C/01 $007-03-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01294585827 204P/01 $010.1515/9781478092629 208@/01 $a07-03-25 $bo 209B/01 $aebo $x05 209B/01 $adeb $x06 237A/01 $aE-Book ggfs. nicht dauerhaft im Bestand. 520 | |a In Paradoxes of Nostalgia Penny M. Von Eschen offers a sweeping examination of the cold war's afterlife and the lingering shadows it casts over geopolitics, journalism, and popular culture. She shows how myriad forms of nostalgia across the globe-from those that posit a mythic national past to those critical of neoliberalism that remember a time when people believed in the possibility of a collective good-indelibly shape the post-cold war era. When Western triumphalism moved into the global South and former Eastern bloc spaces, many articulated a powerful sense of loss and a longing for stability. Innovatively bringing together diplomatic archives, museums, films, and video games, Von Eschen shows that as the United States continuously sought new enemies for its unipolar world, cold war triumphalism fueled the ascendancy of xenophobic right-wing nationalism and the embrace of authoritarian sensibilities in the United States and beyond. Ultimately, she demonstrates that triumphalist claims that capitalism and military might won the cold war distort the past and disfigure the present, undermining democratic values and institutions. | ||
