Unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der Herrschaftszeit Karls des Großen (768–814) und Ludwigs des Frommen (814–840) untersucht der vorliegende Band die Bedeutungen und Wirkungen eschatologischen Denkens in Zeitvorstellungen und Geschichtsdeutungen, in Herrschaftsidealen, Bischofsprofilen und Gesellschaftskonzepten sowie nicht zuletzt bei der Beurteilung des karolingischen Herrschers und der Qualität seiner Herrschaft.
