Data from differential GPS surveys, gained during the summers 1997/98 and 1999/2000, were combined with up to date coastlines from a SPOT satellite image mosaic, and topographic information from maps as well as from the Antarctic Digital Database. A digital terrain model (DTM) was generated using ARC/INFO GIS. From contour lines derived from the DTM and the satellite image mosaic a satellite image map was assembled. Extensive information on data accuracy, the database as well as on the criteria applied to select place names is given in the multilingual map. A lack of accurate topographic information in the eastern part of the island was identified. It was concluded that additional topographic surveying or radar interferometry should be conducted to improve the data quality in this area. In three case studies, the potential applications of the improved topographic database are demonstrated. The first two examples comprise the verification of glacier velocities and the study of glacier retreat from the various input data-sets as well as the use of the DTM for climatological modelling. The last case study focuses on the use of the new digital database as a basic GIS (Geographic Information System) layer for environmental monitoring and management on King George Island lok: 53036425 3 exp: 53036425 3 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-06-25 $t01:11:06.829 201C/01 $006-06-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01305675266 208@/01 $a06-06-25 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/258906 $XH lok: 53036425 5 exp: 53036425 5 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-06-25 $t01:11:06.832 201C/01 $006-06-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01305675274 208@/01 $a06-06-25 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/258906 $XH lok: 53036425 8 exp: 53036425 8 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-06-25 $t01:11:06.835 201C/01 $006-06-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01305675282 208@/01 $a06-06-25 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/258906 $XH lok: 53036425 10 exp: 53036425 10 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-06-25 $t01:11:06.838 201C/01 $006-06-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01305675290 208@/01 $a06-06-25 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/258906 $XH lok: 53036425 11 exp: 53036425 11 1 #EPN 201B/01 $011-06-25 $t00:44:06.444 201C/01 $010-06-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01307031935 208@/01 $a10-06-25 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/258906 $XH lok: 53036425 21 exp: 53036425 21 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-06-25 $t01:11:06.841 201C/01 $006-06-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01305675304 208@/01 $a06-06-25 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/258906 $XH lok: 53036425 23 exp: 53036425 23 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-06-25 $t01:11:06.844 201C/01 $006-06-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01305675312 208@/01 $a06-06-25 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/258906 $XH lok: 53036425 24 exp: 53036425 24 1 #EPN 201B/01 $011-06-25 $t00:44:06.460 201C/01 $010-06-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01307031943 208@/01 $a10-06-25 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/258906 $XH lok: 53036425 25 exp: 53036425 25 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-06-25 $t01:11:06.846 201C/01 $006-06-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01305675320 208@/01 $a06-06-25 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/258906 $XH lok: 53036425 36 exp: 53036425 36 1 #EPN 201B/01 $011-06-25 $t00:44:06.464 201C/01 $010-06-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01307031951 208@/01 $a10-06-25 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/258906 $XH lok: 53036425 72 exp: 53036425 72 1 #EPN 201B/01 $011-06-25 $t00:44:06.470 201C/01 $010-06-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0130703196X 208@/01 $a10-06-25 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/258906 $XH lok: 53036425 107 exp: 53036425 107 1 #EPN 201B/01 $011-06-25 $t00:44:06.481 201C/01 $010-06-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01307031978 208@/01 $a10-06-25 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/258906 $XH lok: 53036425 108 exp: 53036425 108 1 #EPN 201B/01 $011-06-25 $t00:44:06.486 201C/01 $010-06-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01307031986 208@/01 $a10-06-25 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/258906 $XH lok: 53036425 204 exp: 53036425 204 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-06-25 $t01:11:06.850 201C/01 $006-06-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01305675339 208@/01 $a06-06-25 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/258906 $XH lok: 53036425 205 exp: 53036425 205 1 #EPN 201B/01 $007-06-25 $t01:11:06.852 201C/01 $006-06-25 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01305675347 208@/01 $a06-06-25 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://freidok.uni-freiburg.de/data/258906 $XH
