St. Seidenfus, ed., Deregulation - a challenge to economic and social policy in the market economy, Schriften des Verein für Socialpolitik, N. F., Vol. 184, Berlin 1989), it revisited this topic in an expanded and modified form at its 2001 annual conference in St. Gallen. Initial experiences have now been gathered for important markets, which need to be documented and evaluated. At the same time, the practice of deregulation has raised problems that were initially overlooked, but whose relevance has now been recognized and warrants economic analysis. Finally, the aim of the conference was to identify untapped potential for deregulation and privatization. This volume contains contributions from recognized experts on all of these aspects, which it is hoped will receive the attention they deserve in both academia and practice. The topicality and relevance of the subject is demonstrated by the fact that it addresses such intensely debated issues as the reorganization of savings banks and state banks, while also addressing fundamental problems such as effective state aid control and the identification of existing privatization and deregulation potential. The evaluation of previous deregulation practices applies to the most significant sectors in this area, namely the electricity and gas industries and telecommunications...
