The proclamation in late January 2015 of a Wilayat Khorasan, which includes Afghanistan and Pakistan, as an IS branch is commonly interpreted as a manifestation of Daesh's global ambition to erect an Islamic caliphate. Its expansion implies hierarchical order, command structures and financial flows as well as a transnational mobility of fighters, arms and recruits between Syria and Iraq, on the one hand, and Afghanistan-Pakistan, on the other. In this Working Paper, we take a (new) social movement perspective to investigate the processes and underlying dynamics of Daesh’s emergence in different parts of the country. By employing social movement concepts, such as opportunity structures, coalition-building, resource mobilization and framing, we disentangle the different types of resource mobilization and long-term conflicts that have merged into the phenomenon of Daesh in Afghanis lok: 44953571 3 exp: 44953571 3 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:13:51.505 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0114231698X 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/61649 $XH lok: 44953571 5 exp: 44953571 5 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:13:51.512 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142316998 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/61649 $XH lok: 44953571 8 exp: 44953571 8 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:13:51.521 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142317005 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/61649 $XH lok: 44953571 10 exp: 44953571 10 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:13:51.527 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142317013 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/61649 $XH lok: 44953571 11 exp: 44953571 11 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:13:51.534 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142317021 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/61649 $XH lok: 44953571 20 exp: 44953571 20 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:13:51.541 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $0114231703X 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/61649 $XH lok: 44953571 21 exp: 44953571 21 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:13:51.548 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142317048 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/61649 $XH lok: 44953571 23 exp: 44953571 23 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:13:51.555 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142317056 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/61649 $XH lok: 44953571 24 exp: 44953571 24 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:13:51.563 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142317064 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/61649 $XH lok: 44953571 25 exp: 44953571 25 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:13:51.570 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142317072 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/61649 $XH lok: 44953571 36 exp: 44953571 36 1 #EPN 201B/01 $014-10-22 $t23:57:20.558 201C/01 $014-10-22 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01216022666 208@/01 $a14-10-22 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/61649 $XH lok: 44953571 49 exp: 44953571 49 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:13:51.577 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142317080 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/61649 $XH lok: 44953571 54 exp: 44953571 54 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:13:51.591 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142317102 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/61649 $XH lok: 44953571 108 exp: 44953571 108 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:13:51.606 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142317129 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/61649 $XH lok: 44953571 204 exp: 44953571 204 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:13:51.613 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142317137 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/61649 $XH lok: 44953571 205 exp: 44953571 205 1 #EPN 201B/01 $018-02-21 $t23:13:51.619 201C/01 $018-02-21 201U/01 $0utf8 203@/01 $01142317145 208@/01 $a18-02-21 $bl 209S/01 $S0 $uhttps://www.ssoar.info/ssoar/handle/document/61649 $XH
