Dabei ist eine bestimmte Gruppe dem systematisierenden Blick bislang weitgehend entgangen: die »kleinen« Reichsfürsten. Diese teilten den fürstlichen Rang mit den größeren und mächtigen Fürsten, wiesen hinsichtlich ihrer ökonomischen und machtpolitischen Ressourcen aber oft Gemeinsamkeiten mit den Reichsgrafen oder dem Niederadel auf. Ziel des Sammelbandes ist es, das neu erwachte Interesse an fürstlicher Herrschaft jenseits der großen Dynastien zu bündeln sowie über den heuristischen Wert von »Größe« bzw. »Kleinheit« bei der Beschäftigung mit der Fürstengesellschaft nachzudenken. Dazu werden Handlungsspielräume und Zwänge »kleiner« Fürsten vornehmlich anhand von Fallbeispielen des 14. bis 18. Jahrhunderts beleuchtet. In den Blick geraten spezifische Akteure und kommunikative Situationen, aber auch längerfristige Änderungen der inneradligen Ordnungsarrangements. / »Small« Princes in the Holy Roman Empire. Structural Constraints and Social Practices through the Ages (1300–1800): The »small« princes of the Late Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period had the same rank as the great and powerful princes, but they often had points in common with the imperial counts or the lower nobility concerning the economic and political resources.
